Calicut derived its name from Calico, hand-woven cotton cloth that was exported from Kozhikode. Calicut city is the marketing centre in Malabar for commodities like Pepper, Coconut, Tea, Coffee, Rubber, Lemon Grass Oil etc., produced in Kozhikode and the neighbouring districts of Wayanad, Malappuram and Kannur.
